Meal Plan ~ Week 5 - 2011

Well some of you may recall that my family has started on a journey toward eating more ethically. As I had mentioned before it is not something to take lightly and it is not something to just jump into, it's a gradual process. So here are the steps we have taken so far...

1 - All dairy is organic and eggs are to be free run  - looking into getting our eggs farm fresh
2 - I will be planning 2 meals a week that are meat free
3 - I am researching seasonally appropriate recipes and resources
4 - I am researching natural, organic and humanely treated protein sources and looking into getting our protein straight from local family producers.
5 - Start purchasing organic produce

It's a lot of ground work right now, but I feel wonderful with the steps we have achieved in only 2 short weeks. Once we get the steps above into our routine, we will look at cutting processed food out of our diet as much as possible.

One major hurdle that I have come across (and it's a great one to have) is that is we have too many choices in family run protein producers. Living in Alberta means having access to world class beef and it is so hard to choose the right fit. I did find a wonderful resource that has a huge database of farms in our region, check it out here.

Well enough blabbing from me... let's get to what you're really here for! This week's meal plan!

Tuesday ~ Mom out (Meal Assembly Session!) Boys have Leftovers

Wednesday ~ Family out for Grandma's birthday dinner

Thursday ~ Easy Ham Pot Pie served with Salad

Friday ~ Sweet Potato Mac and Cheese served with Salad

Saturday ~ Homemade Burgers (no recipe) served with Crispy Parm Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli

Meal Plan ~ Week 4 - 2011

This week our family is starting to make baby steps toward our journey of becoming more aware of where our food comes from and choosing ethical options. We are not taking this lightly because eating ethically does not necessarily equate to eating economically. We are amazed at the plethora of information and options out there, and are feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment, but are learning more and more everyday.

If the concept of ethical eating interests you, you can get more general info at Eat Kind. For information on Slow Food in America check out Local Harvest and for listings of Farmer's Markets in America check this out. For listings of Farmer's Markets across Canada check out Homemakers who also have a great article on 5 eco-friendly eating habits that is worth a look at. And finally for more Alberta and Calgary specific resources check out  Slow Food and Calgary Farmer Market.  I will post more links and ideas as I come across them. Please feel free to share any information that you may have as well!!

And here begins the week where I start to honestly deceive my son into eating his veggies thanks to Jessica Seinfeld and her Cook Book Deceptively Delicious. Wish me luck!

I hope you have a fabulous week!

Well, the beginning of the transition from Stay at Home Mom to Working Full Time has begun, only in thought and early preparation this week, but a start none the less. I will probably be planning and executing a "fill my freezer" big cook sometime in the next couple weeks, so if that happens I will post my ideas, and recipes as time permits.
There is going to be a lot of closet cleaning and organizing happening here so with simplicity in mind, many of my meals in the coming weeks are old family faves that don't have recipes to link to, but in my reviews I will let you know how I make them so be sure to follow my blog or visit me on Facebook for updates. :)

Big changes are "a brewin'" both with my blog and our home life so be sure to continue coming back to check it out!

Meal Plan ~ Week 51 - 2010

All recipes in this week's Meal Plan (except one) come courtesy of Jamie Oliver and his awesome website. It is a wealth of knowledge, recipes, products, and information on his foundation. I personally have never made any of his meals before, but I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenge and am going to give it my best try.
Right off the bat, my first hurdle was trying to figure out one of the measurements he uses frequently; a "knob" of butter, so I "Googled" it and found this. In my meals, a knob will equal approximately 1 heaping Tbs give or take.

Monday ~ Parmesan Chicken with Crispy Posh Ham served with Mashed Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli

Tuesday ~ Bread and Tomato Soup (Pappa al Pomodoro)

Thursday ~ Mom out!

Friday ~ Company coming! Speedy Sausage and Bean Ragout served with Crusty Bread and Wild Salad & Dessert =  Amazing DIY Chocolate Truffles

Looking for a Child's weekly Lunch and Snack Idea Plan? I posted one yesterday as per a follower's request. Check it out here.

Phew! Can you believe next week's Meal Plan is going to include Christmas Dinner??? I am a lucky duck this year because even though we are hosting Christmas Dinner at our house, I am not cooking the feast. A friend will be doing all the cooking, BUT I am in charge of desserts for the 24th, 25th, 27th, 28th AND the 29th as well as Brunch for the 25th, and Appies for the 25th, and 29th!!!
I have my work cut out for me next week for sure... I better start hunting down some good recipes. If you have any tried, true and beloved holiday recipes that you would like to share please comment on this post or drop me a line. I appreciate any ideas!

Have a great week!

Child's Lunch and Snack Plan

A request was made for me to come up with a Kid's Lunch/Snack Meal Plan for a week. Now I have to say I am not a nutritionist or a child's diet expert, but here is what I have come up with and a lot of this is already in my preschooler's meal plan rotation. I have not put them in any specific day order, just make sure you have the ingredients on hand and let the child choose what they are in the mood for. Also I have to say that my son is a big eater, so you may find that some of the snacks are pretty large, honestly you just need to mix and match and experiment to find what works for you and your child(ren). I hope this gives inspiration to any of you Mom's out there that may have a "meal block" and if you have any of your own ideas or meal plans, please feel free to share; I'm always looking for new ideas!

Day 1 ~ Lunch - Grilled Cheese Sandwich with a slice of Turkey meat served with sliced Banana
Snack - Toast with Peanut Butter and Honey served with a yogurt

Day 2 ~ Lunch - English Muffin topped with Tomato Sauce, slice of Peperoni, sprinkle with Mozza - heat in oven
Snack - Banana slices topped with Peanut Butter and a Raisin served with Yogurt

Day 3 ~ Lunch - Soup with Crackers (my son likes Campbell's Tuscan meatball with Farfalle Pasta)
Snack - Cheese String and Mandarin Oranges in Pear Juice

Day 4 ~ Lunch - Shredded Cheese put in Flour Tortilla, fold over and nuke for 25 secs. serve with Mild Salsa and Grapes (we always eat this picnic style on our living room floor)
Snack - Granny Smith Apple cut into slices and Peanut Butter for dipping

Day 5 ~ Lunch - dice up 2 slices of Ham Sandwich meat, mix with 1/4 Cup Shredded Cheddar and 1 Tbs Mayo, spread onto slice of Bread and put on baking sheet in oven until melted serve with unsweetened Apple Sauce
Snack - Treat day! Teddy Grahams and Banana Slices served with Nutella to dip and Milk

Day 6 ~ Lunch - Carrot Raisin Rollup served with Dried Mango
Snack - unsalted Saltine Crackers topped with Cheese Whiz and served with Grapes

Day 7 ~ Lunch - Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwich served with a glass of Milk
Snack - Trail Mix (we do Multigrain Cheerios, Shreddies, Craisins, Dried Blueberries and a few Dark Chocolate Chips)

Other great snack ideas are any kind of baking like Banana Bread, Muffins, Homemade Granola Bars, etc. The possibilities are endless and if your child loves to help in the kitchen, it becomes an activity too!

Another complex Meal Plan done... Almost didn't get this one in on time for Menu Plan Monday!
I went through my freezers and pantry and did inventories of both - in doing so I decided that I needed to make a meal plan this week where I didn't buy anything other than milk, eggs, and a few veggies to complete the whole week.
Now you may ask, "Can you get printable forms online for freezer and pantry inventories?" and the answer is "YES!" I found some good ones at Organized Home in the Household Notebook Printable Section (Which I cannot stress enough that a Household Notebook is an amazing and necessary thing to have if you like to be organized - check it out!)
It was tough to nail down recipes with my specific critreia for the the whole week, but I managed it!

So here we go...
Monday ~ Cod with Lemon and Parsley served with Rice and Frozen Mixed Veggies

Tuesday ~ Slow Cooked Ribs served with Honey Carrots and Baby Potatoes

Wednesday ~ Baked Polenta with Tomato Sauce served with Tossed Salad

Thursday ~ Maple and Orange-Glazed Chicken served with Baby Potatoes and Broccoli

Friday ~ Marinated Lamb Chops (from butcher) served with Quinoa and Frozen Mixed Veggie

Saturday ~ Mom Out! Leftovers for the boys

Sunday ~ Chicken Korma served with Basmati Rice and  Indian Chapati Bread

Snack ~ Honey Peanut Butter Cookies (from last week)

Meal Plan ~ Week 42 - 2010

For more Meal Plans and Organization Advise visit Organizing Junkie

Ahhhh... (sigh of relief) another Meal Plan Monday completed! This one seemed to sneak up on me, I guess because it took a fair amount of leg work to come up with it.

There are SO many WONDERFUL ladies out there in "Blogland" coming up with Meal Plans EVERY SINGLE week and I know that most of them have some absolutely amazingly yummy sounding meals, so I decided this week is my "Meals of Blogland" Meal Plan. I have researched through hundreds of meal plans and chosen 7 meals from 7 different meal planning bloggers to come up this week's plan. (It was HARD not to choose a hundred, but there are more weeks to come and if this works out, I'll do this again)

I am SO looking forward to this experiment!! Thanks to all these wonderful ladies for your inspiration!

Follow me on Facebook @ Meal Plan-it  hit "Like" to keep up to date on all my posts!

A friend of mine suggested that I check out the Betty Crocker Website, so all the dinners that I will be making this week are from the site in the Fast and Easy Dinner Recipes Section and claim to be on the table in 30 minutes or less, I'm intrigued to see if I can do it.

The end of this week also holds Canadian Thanksgiving - with next Monday being the holiday. As such we are having dinner away from home both Saturday and Sunday. I will not be making the main courses either night, but as requested from both hosts I will be bringing dessert both nights and my yummy Cranberry Sauce on Sunday for Turkey Dinner.

Monday ~ 30 Minute Mini Meat Loaves served with Mashed Potatoes and Zucchini Parmesan

Tuesday ~ Chickpea and Tomato Curry served with Rice

Wednesday ~Penne with Cheesy Tomato Sausage Sauce served with Tossed Salad

Saturday ~ Dessert not decided yet as I am unsure of the menu. Check back to find out!

Sunday ~Double Layer Pumpkin Cheesecake with Homemade Graham Crust
